PM Narendra Modi yet to name Anglo Indian MPs
Anglo-Indian MPs used to be nominated before the second session of Parliament
KOCHI: Even after the passage of six months in office, the Narendra Modi government is yet to nominate two Members of Parliament from the Anglo-Indian community so as to fulfil a constitutional obligation.
In the case of previous dispensations, the Anglo-Indian MPs used to be nominated before the second session of Parliament. This time the winter session is set to start on November 24.
Article 331 of the Representation of the Anglo-Indian community in the House of the People notes that “notwithstanding anything in Article 81, the President may, if he is of opinion that the Anglo-Indian community is not adequately represented in the House of the People, nominate not more than two members of that community to the House of the People.”
The President has to act on the recommendation of the Union Cabinet, but neither the cabinet nor the Prime Minister has moved on the issue despite several lobbies from different states working overtime to secure the posts.
It seems the Kerala leadership of the party is clueless on what the Modi-Amit Shah combine has in mind on this.
Currently, Kerala is not represented in the union council of ministers which makes its case pertinent on this score since it has 75 percent of the total four lakh Anglo-Indians in the country.
