Chennai: A drunken youth who was detained by a traffic police inspector on the Vellore-Chennai road near Wallajah escaped in the police officer’s jeep after attacking him early on Wednesday. The 19-year-old youth took the Vellore police for a ride in their officer’s vehicle for three hours before he was detained. The youth, identified as John Paul, 19, a resident of of Sathuvachari in Vellore, was detained by traffic inspector Seetharaman, 52, around 3.30 am on the highway after a motorist complained that a youth on a two-wheeler had been trying to extort money from other motorists.
 
The police inspector then approached the youth, who was drunk. He had seized his two-wheeler and asked for documents when the youth claimed that the documents were not with him and wanted the police to release his vehicle so that he could go home and bring it for their scrutiny.Despite repeated demands from the youth, Seetharaman refused to let him go, following which the youth got angry and pulled out a knife. 
 
He then attacked the inspector with the knife while police driver Rajasekhar was standing nearby. As Rajasekhar attended to his inspector, John Paul got into the police jeep and sped away.Other policemen who were on duty alerted the local police about the incident and took the injured Seetharaman to a hospital. Special teams were formed to nab the man fleeing in a police jeep and all check-posts were alerted.
 
A police team tracked him down at Kolavattam road in Vellore and arrested him. The inspector’s vehicle was also seized from him. The Vellore police said they were checking the youth’s background to find out if he was involved in any other crimes.
