Chennai: ‘Student’ by day and thief by night - this 29-year-old man likes to sleep on a bed of currency notes. The J.J. Nagar police arrested currency-obsessed Rajkumar during a vehicle check at Koyambedu on Friday morning in connection with a waylaying incident in which he and his associate, Arogyadas from Vallakottai, robbed a Theni-based businessman in Golden George Nagar on Thursday night.
Rajkumar, who was arrested earlier in connection with theft cases, had been posing as a student to stay in a lodge at Kattupakkam, near Poonamallee, while Arogyadas, wanted in a number of cases in Coimbatore, was working in a private firm in Vallakottai.Using his young rugged look to his advantage, Rajkumar moved around with college students in buses during the day. He also searched for his target during the day and usually struck at night along with Aroygadas.
The two came in contact when they were lodged in Puzhal central prison. “The two operate together only at night when they are breaking into a home or shop. Otherwise, both lead their lives separately. Arograydas occasionally visits Rajkumar at his lodge. This is when he took pictures of Rajkumar sleeping on currency notes and also playing with notes,” a police officer said.
According to the police, Rajkumar sells all the loot immediately after committing a house break-in. “He likes to spend money on alcohol and women. He wanted to earn a lot of money so that he can take his favourite actress on a date one day,” the police said. The police recovered 40 sovereigns of gold and Rs50,000 cash from the arrested men.
