LPG may cost more for rich, hints finance minister Arun Jaitley
He suggested that there is no need to give subsidy on LPG to people who are well off
New Delhi: Finance minister Arun Jaitley on Friday set out the reform agenda for the forthcoming Winter Session of Parliament, saying the government will try to pass the Insurance Bill and Coal Bill and introduce a constitutional amendment on the ambitious Goods and Services Tax Bill.
On subsidies reform, he indicated the government will now be looking to rationalise the LPG subsidy after having de-regulated petrol and diesel prices.
He suggested that there is no need to give subsidy on LPG to people who are already well off. “The next important decision India will have to take is whether people like me... (are) entitled to get our LPG subsided,” he said. “I think the sooner we are able to take these decisions, the better it would be for our system. These decisions are all on our agenda,” said Mr Jaitley.
He pointed out that the Expenditure Management Commission had held a meeting with him recently and that they would soon come up with suggestions on how to rationalise subsidies.
The minister said his proposals for GST are almost ready.
