Chennai: Six more persons, all executives of Rich India Ltd, were arrested on Saturday for assaulting the PT instructor of Loyola matriculation higher secondary school, Kodambakkam, increasing the number of persons arrested in the case to 25. However, the prime accused, D. Arulanandhu, proprietor of the company whose son was allegedly given corporal punishment, continues to evade arrest.

Rich India promoters is a real estate company run by Arulanandhu who also runs a free IAS coaching centre in Kodambakkam. Incidentally, Arulanandhu, a native of Tiruchy, was one of the accused in an MLM (multi-level marketing) cheating case in 2003.

According to a police officer the investigating the 2003 case, more than 80 persons were arrested by the Central crime branch of the city police then, including a cine actor who ran the company. All of them were acquitted later. “The police received complaints about one of the company’s products, a magnetic bed, which they claimed would act as a pain healer,” the officer said.

The bed was sent to a lab and it was found that it had no such properties after which the police booked a case under ‘The Drugs and Magic Remedies Act’ and under sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust) and arrested them. “Arulanandhu might have been a middle-level guy then; I don’t remember much about him,” the officer says, expressing no surprise that one of them has managed to resurface as a businessman.

On Saturday, the Kodambakkam police arrested the company’s executive director Mahesh, gym in-charge Krishnamoorthy, vice-presidents Bala Subramani and Arunagiri, executive officer Velusamy, chief business officer Dhaya Kumar. Nineteen employees of the company were arrested on Friday for trespassing into the school and assaulting PT instructor S. Baskar Raj, based on evidence from the CCTV footage.

Baskar Raj is being treated at the government Royapettah hospital, the police said. The Kodambakkam police have launched a hunt for the main accused and his brother Sebastian.
