VisakhapatnamG. Prasanth, the 19-year-old first-year B.Sc nursing student of NRI Institute of Medical Sciences in Vizag, who attempted suicide after allegedly being ragged by seniors, died on Saturday morning while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the city.

Chaos prevailed at the hospital after  Prasanth’s  parents, relatives and other  students’ groups demanded action against the management of NRIIMS.

Prasanth had  jumped off the fourth floor of the college’s hostel building on the morning of November 17, and was admitted to KG Hospital  with multiple fractures on both legs and hands and injuries to his face.

He was in coma and was shifted to a private hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Prasanth was a native of TR Valasa  in  Parvathipuram region of Vizianagaram district.

“Prasanth had called my  father, G. Simhachalam, and told him that he was being ragged by seniors and wanted to leave the college. We believe that my brother ended his life due to the ragging, but officials dismissed it as personal problems  and washed their hands off the matter,” said Prasanth’s elder sister G. Sandhya.

The college officials claimed they had found a suicide note in Prasanth’s shirt pocket and handed it to the police. The note allegedly mentions that Prasanth had decided to end his life since he was unable to fulfil his parents’ dreams. His parents and relatives, however, say the alleged note was a fabrication by the management.
