People of Vijayawada face scarcity of skilled labour
The city has a population of over a million but has very few domestic help and labour
Vijayawada: Vijayawada, which has over million-and-a-half population, is facing the scarcity of skilled labour as well as domestic help for locals.
The city which is now major source for residential space and other needs for AP capital is suffering scarcity of men and women for domestic help in residences and poor number of skilled workers like electricians, plumbers and others.
This scarcity of lack of domestic help is forcing people to buy electronic equipment like washing machines, dish cleaners and others as an alternative.
“Due to health problems we decided to take help of some house maid and looked out for domestic help for over two months but there was no use. We are forced to buy washing machine worth thousands for the purpose of washing clothes,” said Ms S. Lakshmi, a resident of Ramachandrapuram near Siddhartha Nagar.
Same is the situation at many areas like KP Nagar, Siddhartha Nagar, LIC Colony, Bank Colony, Gurunanak Nagar, Satyanarayanapuram, Patamata, Currency Nagar, Veterinary Colony and other posh areas of city.
With the increase in demand for domestic help, each woman who serves as domestic help is forced to work for more than 10 houses in some areas.
This, on the other hand is helping women ready to work as domestic help earn more in less time and luring parents to deploy their children to work.
Also this is forcing children to work as domestic help. It may be worth mentioning that four girl children were found working as domestic help in three houses at Kanuru and KP Nagar.
Apart from this, there is severe shortage of skilled workers. As the services of small-time carpenters, electricians and other technicians still are under unorganised sector people depend on street-side workers if any.
