Tamil Nadu Governor lays stress on diet, lifestyle to fight cancer
India alone has about 20 million patients and out of them are 8 million children
Chennai: Dietary habits and lifestyle modification have a great impact in reducing the number of cancer patients.
It is time NGOs and the medical fraternity joined hands to sensitise people on the need for regular physical activity, proper diet and healthy practices, said
Governor K. Rosaiah, at a function organised by the Chennai Cancer Care Hospital and the Cancer Care Foundation to celebrate ‘Cancer Conquerors Day’, on Saturday.
India alone has about 20 million patients and out of them are 8 million children who are below two years of age. Research on the disease reveals that early detection would prevent 30 per cent of cancer, he said.
He added that there is a link between obesity and some types of cancer. “Abstaining from paan, tobacco and alcohol prevents cancer, in a big way,” he said. The policies should be formed so that they bring awareness among the public on cancer prevention, he said.
