Mumbai:  The D/L (Duckworth and Lewis) method which is being used by the ICC for the rain affected matches will now be known as D/L/S method. The new name has become effective last month when the system came for revision.

The identity of the third addition is as of now only known as Stern. Its contribution to the original work designed by Frank Duckworth and Tony Lewis is not known.

When contacted both in UK, Duckworth and Lewis confirmed the new name as D/L/S and merely added they have added S as their Stern software. The D/L is a mathematical formula used to calculate the target score for the team batting second in a limited over match (ODI and Twenty20) interrupted by rain, bad weather or other circumstances.

"Generally, the method is being reviewed every two years and it was already reviewed last year and therefore was not due this year", says V. Jayadevan, an Indian Engineer, whose own System (VJD method) was implemented in Indian cricket, said.

"The new D/L/S version has improved for Twenty20 games, however, it has gone worse for the other limited over-format (ODI) matches", he observed.

V.Jayadevan, whose method has been appreciated by none other than Sunil Gavaskar, was keen on his own method be introduced at the highest level. He was even invited by the ICC for the demonstration a few years ago.

Now India's N. Srinivasan as ICC's chairman, Jayadevan hopes for his own method's recognition one day. "I am keen to meet Srinivasan one day and will explain him how my method is better than D/L/S", he said.
