CBSE likely to introduce lessons on drug abuse
It is the curriculum committee which has to take a final decision
KOCHI: Even as Kerala schools and the state government move ahead with initiatives to wean away students from tobacco, tobacco-related products and drugs, the CBSE is now mulling including lessons regarding ill-effects of the use of drug, tobacco and alcohol in the higher classes up to Class XII.
Kerala CBSE School Management Association president T P M Ibrahim Khan placed this agenda before CBSE Chairman Vineet Joshi, and the latter said that he would place it before the curriculum committee of CBSE for being included in the CBSE curriculum.
“It is the curriculum committee which has to take a final decision. It is a good suggestion to guide the future generations in the right direction and shape the destiny of the nation. I will place it before the curriculum committee,” Vineet Joshi told DC.
Ibrahim Khan said that it had been identified that more and more students were lured by tobacco-related products and other intoxicating substances which come in the form of toffees and also dangerous drugs.
“It is high time the subject is included in the curriculum to alert students on the vicious impact of their use. We need to sensitise parents too about it and CBSE schools in the state are planning a movement in this regard,” he said.
Kerala syllabus schools have currently included a textbook called ‘Athijeevanam’ (Survival) prepared by the SCERT from Class VIII onwards to teach students about the ill-effects of the use of drug and tobacco, according to SCERT Director Dr Raveendran.
