Kottayam: With the confirmation of  bird flu in the district, 1,290  infected ducks were culled, burnt and buried by six squads of the rapid action force at Kollathukara in  Aymanam panchayat  on Wednesday.

According to animal husbandry department sources, another five teams of the rapid action force will begin the culling in  Kumarakom panchayat on Thursday.

District collector Ajith Kumar told a  meeting of various departments at the collectorate  that the bird flu was  under control. “Some 30,000 tablets meant to stop the infection  in humans will come from Rajasthan. Each panchayat  can spend Rs 50,000 to take measures to  control the bird flu,”  he added.

The Kumarakom bird sanctuary has been closed as a precaution.  An 84-member team of the health department examined 2, 280 people in 748 houses in  nine wards of six panchayats.

“Twenty persons handling birds were examined. No symptoms of bird flu were found among anyone,”  district medical officer, Dr Iysha Bhai told Deccan Chronicle.
