Raipur: An elephant herd early on Wednesday morning went on the rampage in the tribal village of Jamteli in Chhattisgarh’s Jashpur district, killing an elderly woman and razing to the ground all the huts.
The tuskers virtually herded the entire population towards the corner of the hamlet and then pushed them into a nearby well.
The plight of the villagers did not end there.
A herd of 20 elephants guarded the well whole night, throwing stones with their trunks targeting the people stranded inside the well.
The elephants left the village after sunrise.
A 55-year-old woman, identified as Gurubari Bai, was trampled to death by the herd. The elephants destroyed all the huts in the village.
