Bengaluru: The High Grounds police have cracked a ‘honey trap’ and extortion case and arrested five people, including a couple, on Wednesday, based on a complaint by a doctor. The police recovered cash, car, an autorickshaw, laptops and mobile phones, all totally worth around Rs 25 lakh.

The accused have been identified as Anees Ahmed (23), his wife Sumaiya (20), Ijaz (22), all residents of Yasin Nagar in K.G. Halli, Sadiq Pasha (22) of D.J. Halli, and Shafiulla (27) of Tannery Road. Anees was a habitual offender and an associate of rowdy sheeter Tanveer Ahmed. He has several cases of attempt to robbery and dacoity against him in D.J. Halli, J.C. Nagar and High Grounds police station.

Police said the victim was a 55-year-old doctor, working in prestigious hospital and residing in Sheshadripuram, while Sumaiya was his patient. Two months ago, she got married to Anees against her parents’ wish. Anees was unemployed and the couple had no known source of income.

So they hatched a plan to extort the doctor. “As per the plan, Sumaiya visited the doctor on November 12 and invited the doctor to her house for lunch. While the doctor was initially reluctant, she pleaded with him to visit a poor woman’s house. Finally, the doctor agreed,” the police said.

When he went inside to Sumaiya’s house on November 15 afternoon, Anees and his associates closed the door. The threatened him and made him remove his shirt. Sumaiya reportedly sat next to him clad in a torn saree. Anees and his aides then took semi naked pictures of the doctor and Sumaiya on their mobile phones. Police said the couple, along with their associates, demanded Rs 20 lakh from the doctor. They threatened to show the photos to his family
members and media outlets, and file a rape case, if he refused to comply. The doctor gave Rs 5 lakh on the same day and the remaining Rs 15 lakh was paid on November 17. After receiving the money, the accused had reportedly destroyed the memory card containing those pictures in front of the doctor.

However, they again demanded Rs 3 lakh from the doctor and the latter decided to seek police help. He filed a complaint on November 20, the police added.
After the complaint was lodged the couple went absconding. However based on an information that they had returned home on Wednesday, they were arrested. After interrogating them the three accomplices were also caught.

Using the ill-gotten money, Anees had bought a bike and got his car repaired. He had also gifted a high end mobile phone and a laptop to his wife. He paid '1 lakh each to his associates. Rs 14.5 lakh in cash, a car, an autorickshaw, laptop and mobile phones were recovered from them,” the police added.

Sumaiya was pursuing BCom through distance education after passing second PU last year. “She was in love with one Saleem, who happened to be Anees’s friend. Anees was supporting their relationship and helping them. Gradually, Sumaiya fell in love with Anees and they got married,” the police said.
