Kollam: The Additional Sessions Court VI on Friday awarded life imprisonment to two policemen who were on Thursday found guilty in the custody death of a man at the Kollam east police station in 2005.

The accused Jayakumar, 47, of Madathil Puthenveedu, Thrikkadavoor, and Venugopal, 48, of Thannolil Veedu, Eravipuram, were also fined Rs 1 lakh each by judge K.S. Sarathchandran.

Jayakumar was working with the Kollam district Crime Records Bureau and Venugopal  with the Eravipurm CI office.

Both were  with the  crime squad at the Kollam east police station when the incident happened  on April 6, 2005. 

Rajendran of Raj Nivas, Kadakulam, Padinjattinkara in Kottarakkara, who was taken into custody in connection with a theft case, died in police custody.  

Rajendran was detained by the Kollam east police following a complaint filed by Sankar’s Hospital here  that he  had stolen a mobile phone from an inpatient Shajahan in the hospital.

Rajendran was taken into custody by ASI  Sadanandan.  He was later taken by SI Babu of the same station and handed over to Jayakumar and Venugopal, of the crime squad.

Rajendran, who was interrogated by the duo at the Sardar Vallabhai Patel Museum  around 2.20 in the afternoon, was brutally assaulted and taken to the district hospital where he was declared brought dead.
