Actor Sandhya Mridul who will make her comeback in television with Private Investigator chats with us about her penchant for detective stories, playing a mother onscreen and how she loves to take on new challenges as an actor.

Why were you away from TV for so long?
It’s been a long time since I did TV not because I don’t favour the medium, but because I didn’t want to keep repeating myself in my roles. Roles on TV were getting repetitive and I don’t like being stereotyped as an actor.

What made you pick Private Investigator?
PI interests me on many levels as an actor. The role of Anita is fun to play and will challenge me at some point. Her look is interesting too, and suits me.
I like the creative team of the show and I like the actors Aamir and Mrinal. It was time to open my khaata (account) with Star Plus finally.

Are you a fan of detective stories?
Yes, a huge fan. I grew up reading Agatha Christie and loved Hercule Poirot.

Besides acting, what else has kept you busy?
Yoga and life keeps me busy.

You haven’t been doing too many movies of late. Why so?
I’ve never liked to work for the sake of working. I continue to work at my pace and as and when something excites me. I’m not in a race with anybody.

Were you open to playing a mother onscreen or were you skeptical in the beginning?
I don’t believe in having boundaries as an actor. If I like a character, I play it.

Your roles in Banegi Apni Baat and Koshish...Ek Aashaa are still remembered. How do you feel about that?
Thank you. That’s exactly why I don’t do anything and everything. I would like to be remembered by the parts I’ve played not the number of parts, but how I’ve played them.
