Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

Adilabad: The Congress will celebrate December 9 as ‘Telangana Day’ on a grand scale in the state as the party considers the date has historical importance due to the fact that it announced its decision on that day in Parliament in 2009 to create a Telangana state though the new state was formed only on June 2, 2014.

Congress leaders described the decision as Sonia Gandhi’s birthday gift to the people of Telangana. On this day, all Congress leaders will participate in the celebrations in their respective areas and enrol party members. The party’s state secretary and district coordinator of the party’s membership drive, Mr Naresh Jadhav said they were asked by the TPCC to celebrate December 9 on a grand scale at the village and mandal level as it was a historic day in the fight for Telangana.

“Former home minister P. Chidambaram had announced in Parliament that the Centre will create a Telangana state respecting the aspirations of the people on December 9, 2009,” said Naresh, and added that the historical decision on the formation of Telangana was party president Sonia Gandhi’s birthday gift to the people. He said it is high time the Congress reminded the people of Telangana that it was the Congress that took the historical decision as far as creation of Telangana was concerned.

A special programme involving people will be organised in all polling booth areas and Sonia Gandhi’s birthday will be celebrated. The public will be told about the decision of the party to create Telangana. A source said the party was aiming to enrol two lakh new members.
