ISIS gaining sympathy in India: Intelligence report
Outfits like IS and al-Qaeda have been able to attract sympathisers within the country
New Delhi: Areeb Majeed, an IS recruit who returned to India, has no remorse over joining the outfit. Indian intelligence and security agencies are worried that outfits like ISIS and al-Qaeda have been able to attract sympathisers within the country, particularly youngsters, who may provide it logistical support even if they don’t take part in terror activity.
This was discussed at length at the recent DGPs’ conference in Guwahati. The issue was discussed at length during one of the key sessions at the recently concluded meeting of DGs and IGs of police organised in Guwahati.
According to an internal draft note circulated at the meeting, on growing influence of ISIS and Al Qaeda, “the two terror organisations have been able top attract some sympathisers in the country. But the role of these sympathisers may well be limited to that of sleeper agents rather than actively joining the terror outfits. In the days ahead these sympathisers can play an active role in providing logistical support.”
