Hyderabad: In a rather strong attack, director-producer Thammareddy Bharadwaj came down heavily on Telugu actresses for not taking an active part in the recently concluded ‘Memu Saitham’ fund-raising event.

“I asked them to come for the rehearsals but they just didn’t turn up and instead, went to party. When everybody was seriously participating in this event which was for a cause, our Telugu actresses chose to party, rather than attend the event,” said Bharadwaj, at a press conference in the city.

He added that the actresses had to be personally requested to come for the event, and that they were selective in their appearance at events.

“This event was related to the industry and everybody should’ve felt as if it was their own function,” he says, adding that if a private film award function took place in the city, these same actresses would have asked for extra passes and would have attended even if they were not invited.

Thammareddy, however, praised local choreographers and dancers for coming up with a good show. “We usually depend on Mumbai and Chennai whenever big events like these take place, but this time only Telugu dancers and choreographers made the event successful,” he says.

Thamareddy’s statement on Wednesday seemed increasingly one-sided, especially if you consider that top male actors, including Pawan Kalyan, were conspicuously absent from the marathon fund-raiser.

Thammareddy didn’t name anybody in his rant but notable mentions on the hit-list are Madhushalini, Reshma Rathode, Tejaswini and Anisha Ambrose. The producer also seemed to hint that absentee celebrities were to blame for low collections from the event.

“On the same day of the ‘Memu Saitham’ event, singer S.P. Balasubramanyam collected Rs 1 crore from a one-hour concert in Chittoor. Our 13-hour programme, however, only managed to collect around Rs 11 crore,” he said. The total sum also includes individual contributions from film stars.

But soon after Thamareddy’s statement, actresses too were strong in their reactions. Even those who performed, including actress Archana, were unhappy with the producer’s choice of words. A star who wanted to remain anonymous asked why the veteran was only picking on the “juniors”.

Kajal Agarwal, Tamannaah, Trisha, Nayantara, Anushka, Charmme and many others didn’t perform on stage either. Why is he picking on us? Next time, the event should be exclusively given to Telugu actresses and we’ll be there,” the star added.
