Hyderabad: Autorickshaw drivers' unions in the twin cities have collectively decided to go on a one-day strike to protest the Central government’s proposed Road Safety Bill, 2014, which will increase the fine amounts for various offences.
In fact, the Bill has proposed fine amounts ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 1 lakh for small vehicles, and from Rs 5,000 to Rs 3 lakh for bigger vehicles. The proposed Bill, meanwhile, is also seeing opposition from various quarters and individual rallies have also been held in the city.
As per the Bill, the first time a driver jumps a signal, he/she will be fined Rs 5000. The second time, the amount will be Rs 10,000. The offender will have to pay Rs 15,000 for the third time, and if they are caught the fourth time, the offender will have his/her licence cancelled.
Similarly, driving without a permit (for transport vehicles) and without insurance will result in a fine of Rs 25,000. Driving a school autorickshaw dangerously will lead to a fine of Rs 25,000, while an accident causing death will result in a fine of Rs 1 lakh and four-year imprisonment.
“The Bill has also proposed a fine of upto Rs 15,000 on bicycle-riders for jumping signals. If the proposed Bill is passed by Parliament, it will be a major blow to all road users. All auto unions will be on a one-day strike to oppose the Bill,” said Auto Driver Unions’ JAC leader Mohammad Amanullah Khan.
