New Delhi: Days after the controversy over replacement of German with Sanskrit as the third language in Kendriya Vidyalayas, the Union government on Wednesday stated that all central universities have been asked to explore the possibilities of opening of Sanskrit department.
“In order to promote Sanskrit language, the Centre has requested all central universities, where department of Sanskrit does not exist, to explore the possibilities of opening of Sanskrit departments,” Union HRD minister Smriti Irani informed the Lok Sabha.
She also said that the UGC was providing grants to five Sanskrit universities and two Sanskrit deemed-to-be-universities.
Ms Irani’s comment came in a written reply to a question by a BJP MP on whether the Centre was emphasising on establishment of centres for teaching Sanskrit, Chinese, Russian, Urdu and European languages.
