KOCHI: The decision of Abin Saji, a final-year student of electronics and instrumentation engineering, to donate stem cell  has helped  save the life of a 19-year-old girl suffering from leukaemia.

The  donation and the surgery were carried out in a hospital in the city and the girl is recovering.

The details of the person who received the donation has not been revealed as per the protocols associated with the donation, said Abin. “I think it takes 18 months to determine whether the person recovered fully or not. Till then, the personal details will not be revealed,”  he said.

Abin, a student of KMEA Engineering College, had participated in the stem cell donation camp conducted by the college in April in association with  Dathri, a Bengaluru-based organisation engaged in the promotion of  stem cell donation.

The girl who had registered at the Dathri found that the cell sample of Abin matched  hers. Generally, only one in 10,000 persons would have the stem cell matching a person.

This is the second time a student of the KMEA Engineering College had volunteered to donate the stem cell. A few months ago, Akshay Krishnan of the college donated his stem cell to a 29-year- old person from Bengaluru.

Akshay also had the reputation of being the youngest stem cell donor in the state. Incidentally, Abin is a classmate of Akshay. “The college is happy that they are being an inspiration and an ideal for the whole of  society,”  said Mr T.C. Mani, principal of the college.
