Address alleged irregularities in MNREGA scheme: DMK chief M Karunanidhi
Over two lakh families were yet to receive any employment under MNREGA
Chennai: Backing UPA's flagship MNREGA scheme, DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Sunday asked the NDA government to address alleged irregularities in it and continue with the employment programme.
Recalling that the scheme was launched in 2005, he said beneficiaries under it had not received wages for the past three months while projects taken up under this scheme at many places were incomplete.
While over two lakh families were yet to receive any employment under MNREGA for the last eight months, there were complaints of alleged irregularities in payment of wages to the beneficiaries, he said in party mouthpiece 'Murasoli.'
Karunanidhi said allocation for this scheme had been cut down this year.
He stated that his daughter and Rajya Sabha member, Kanimozhi, had recently highlighted in Parliament, the importance of MNREGA for rural employment, especially in states like Tamil Nadu.
"Considering people's welfare, Centre should address the (alleged) irregularities and take steps for proper functioning of the scheme," he said.
