Flying squad officials seize smuggled rice

VELLORE: A special food cell police flying squad headed by tahsildar Rajasekaran and revenue officials on Monday night seized 500 kg of PDS rice being smuggled out in the Cauvery express, bound for Bengaluru from Chennai and arrested a person. The squad also seized another 200 kgs of rice, after arresting a person.
According to sources, following a tip-off that the squad received, a team of officials who went to Katpadi railway station, made a thorough search of the train and found 500 kgs of PDS rice kept inside the general compartment.
They also saw two more persons carrying several rice bags on their bicycles to transport them through trains in general compartments. Sources added that a total of 700 kgs of rice was seized. On seeing the squad, the two cyclists had left their cycles on a road and escaped.
Among three persons, the team arrested Bhaskaran, a native of Govinda Reddy Palayam, Oosur, near Katpadi, said the sources. A case has been registered and further investigations are on.
