Hyderabad: Over 20 persons were on Friday hospitalised in Nizamabad district of Telangana as they complained of health problems after drinking toddy, while an 80-year-old man is suspected to have died following its consumption, police said.

"Twenty-five residents of Sangam village under Birkur police station limits of the district started vomiting after consuming toddy Thursday night," Banswada Rural Circle Inspector Ramana Reddy said.

They were shifted to a nearby hospital and a 80-year-old man among them died on Friday, the police officer said, adding, "However, it is still not clear whether the old man died due to consumption of toddy or due to old age-related problems".

The victim's body was sent for postmortem, which will throw more light on the reasons behind his death, Reddy said.

"Those undergoing treatment at the hospital claimed that the 80-year-old man had consumed toddy along with them Friday night," the Circle Inspector said.

Further investigation into the case is on.
