Tourists play volleyball inside Bandipur Tiger Reserve

Bengaluru: Last month, pictures on social networking sites of tourists taking selfies with a wild elephant behind them on the Bandipur Tiger Reserve highway, had shocked animal lovers.

This time, a group of tourists have done something worse-they played volleyball for more than an hour on the highway and abused those who told them about rules pertaining to protected areas. The ‘volleyball match’ was played by seven tourists travelling in a vehicle (KL 11 H 666) on Gundlupet-Sultan Batheri Road, part of NH 212.

“They stopped on the road and took photographs. When we told them they could not park in an area frequented by elephants, they mocked us saying we could take pictures of them and complain to officials,” said Arun Kumar, a wildlife conservationist from Kerala.

He claims he complained to officials at the Bandipur exit gate but no action was taken. Mr H.C. Kantharaj, director of Bandipur Reserve asserted the matter was not brought to his notice.
