It is estimated that there are one lakh workers from Telangana in Dubai
Hyderabad: On the second day of his visit to Dubai, IT minister K.T. Rama Rao met migrant workers from Telangana.
They constitute the second largest group after those from Kerala in Dubai. It is estimated that there are one lakh workers from Telangana in Dubai. “The minister visited Sonapur camp where about 20,000 workers from Telangana live. He saw the conditions under which they live, the kitchen, dining hall, and bathrooms. He also discussed about their problems.
Many workers are exploited by agents first and then by employers. They live in difficult living conditions. Non-payment of minimum wages is another common issue,” a press release stated.
Mr Rama Rao discussed the possibility of organising skills training for workers going for work overseas, registration of workers, regulation of agents, preparing literature on rights of workers, deploying Telugu speaking staff in Indian Consulate, legal assistance, designing an insurance scheme for migrant workers, assistance in relocating willing workers back to Telangana by identifying suitable local jobs, and so on.
He assured workers that the government will soon bring out a policy to help migrant workers.
Also possibilities of setting up a similar facility in the new Pharma City coming up in Hyderabad was discussed.
