Opposition wants PM Narendra Modi’s clarification
The PM himself assure the House that such things would not be allowed
New Delhi: Pandemonium affected the Rajya Sabha’s functioning on Monday as it faced repeated adjournments after Opposition MPs pressed for an immediate debate on the conversion issue and demanded a clarification on it from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Finance minister Arun Jaitley said the government was ready for a debate and asked the Opposition if it wanted a “total ban on all religious conversions or forced conversions”, either of which was acceptable to the Centre.
Raising concern over reports of conversion in Agra, the Opposition demanded the PM himself assure the House that such things would not be allowed.
Members from the Congress, Left and TMC said that only the PM should reply, and entered the Well. Deputy chairman P.J. Kurein said he could not ask the government which particular minister should reply.
