KOTTAYAM: The Aruvikuzhy water fall tourism project inaugurated by  Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in September 2011 has not made much progress  though Rs 98.5 lakh was earmarked for it.

Though the work was scheduled to be completed within a year,  it has been delayed due to lack of funds and the apathy of the authorities.  According to the locals,  the area is a haven for  anti-social elements.

“The project had the potential to transform the region  as it is a tourism destination.  But not even half of the funds has been utilized so far.  There is no proper path to the project area. Anti-social elements are active there at  night,”  says Jims, a resident of Aruvikuzhy.

The development works include construction of an entrance passage, security cabin, landscaping, children’s park, snack bar, rain shelters, toilet block, footpath  and a hanging bridge.

In addition, electrification of the area, plumbing work and setting up  signboards were envisaged. Mr  Jiji Anchany, standing committee chairman of the Pampady block panchayat, told Deccan Chronicle that  the Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (KITCO) was entrusted with the project.

“The renovation will begin in a short time. The delay is due to the diversion of  funds for other projects,” he said.
