Tech varsity draft law insists on sem credits

The draft would be discussed with various stakeholders before being promulgated

Thiruvananthapuram: The draft ordinance and regulations of the newly-formed Kerala Technical University (KTU) have stipulated that a student should have a minimum number of credits in a semester to move to the next.

Those who fall short of this will have to register for the summer courses offered or join the same semester and earn the required minimum credits to move to the next semester.

The draft would be discussed with various stakeholders before being promulgated.

KAT Pro-Vice-Chancellor M. Abdul Rahman told Deccan Chronicle that the maximum number of credits a student could register in a semester would be 26.

In the first semester, those who do not earn 12 credits would  be warned before they are allowed to proceed to the second semester.

However,  at the end of the second semester the credits earned should be at least a combined total of 28 to move to the third semester.

Those who fall short of this have to register for the summer courses offered or join back the first semester and earn the required minimum credits to move to the third semester, Mr Rahman said.

The number of credits a student should earn during the subsequent semesters are as follows:  Fourth semester 15,  fifth 10, sixth 9  and seventh 6.

The curriculum of any branch of the B.Tech programme will be designed to have a total of 172 credits.

As per the draft regulations, the duration for the B.Tech and B.Tech(Honours) programme in all branches of study  will normally be eight semesters. For B.Arch and B.Arch (Honours) this will be 10 semesters.

The  curriculum  of  any  branch  of  the  B.Tech  programme  is designed to have a total of 172 credits.

The breakup of credits will be as follows: Basic sciences 8, mathematics 14, humanities 9, basic engineering 21, professional engineering 86, electives 18, seminar 2, comprehensive viva 3, design project 3 and project 8.

Apart from that,  students should enrol for mandatory audited course in NCC, NSO, sports and NSS.
