KOLLAM: The continuing delay in identifying land has been keeping the ambitious medical college project in the district in limbo.

The 16 acres owned by Parvathi Mills in the heart of the city which is under consideration has been tangled in administrative delays.

The district administration is also eyeing the land near Ashramam Guest house for the project despite protests from the people.

A high-level meeting attended by Health and Labour ministers had directed the district collector to submit a report regarding locating 10 acres on the south part of Ashramam guest house.

However, the public demand is that the college be set up on the Parvathi mill land which is much closer to the district hospital and the Government Victoria Hospital.

“The land owned by Parvathi mill is definitely the spot to be considered to set up the medical college which is a long-pending dream of the people of Kollam,” said P.K. Gurudasan, MLA.

Meanwhile, Parvathi Mill is battling litigation on the abandoned modernisation moves  allegedly at the behest of “vested interests” with an eye on the land.

The district administration also has land at Mukhathala, Kundara and Mundakkal under consideration.

The land of Parvathi Mill currently registered with National Textile Corporation was donated by erstwhile King of Travancore in 1884 to start AD Cotton Mill. The land was with Kerala State Textile Corporation in 1972 and was taken over by NTC in 1974.
