Telangana sets up its own Wakf Tribunal

AP Tribunal’s jurisdiction is limited to residuary state

Hyderabad: The Telangana government on Tuesday constituted the State Wakf Tribunal for the determination of disputes or other matters relating to a Wakf or Wakf properties in Telangana under the Wakf Act, 1995.

The officials of the minority welfare department said the need to constitute the tribunal was felt as the state government  noticed that the existing Andhra Pradesh State Wakf Tribunal, which was constituted in the erstwhile state of AP, is neither listed in Schedule IX nor in Schedule X of the AP Reorganisation Act. Hence, its jurisdiction  shall be limited to the residuary state.

The three member new tribunal will be headed by a judicial officer, not below the rank of a district sessions judge or a civil judge, Class I.

An officer from the state civil services and another having knowledge of Muslim Law and Jurisprudence will be posted as members of the tribunal.
