Coimbatore:  About 10,000 powerloom units in and around Kumarapalayam downed their shutters on Friday to condemn the murder of the owner of a powerloom unit and his daughter by one of the workers, near here two days ago.

The units in Kumarapalayam, Somanur, Kannampalayam, Ayyampalayam and Kadampadi remained closed, condemning the brutal killing of their colleague and sought stringent and punitive action against the murderers, police said.

It has become a routine where the workers, particularly from outside, come and seek jobs but leave after taking salary advances incurring losses to the owners, police said quoting the agitators.

The closure will have a production loss of about Rs 50 lakh, they said.

Rakiappan, owning power looms, and his daughter Vinodhini were found murdered with multiple stab injuries near his house in a village near Sulur on the outskirts, in the late hours of December 24 and police arrested a worker, Kumar and his two friends in this connection.
