Hyderabad: Eleven-year-old Abbas Hussain Khan is rather focussed, when he says that horse-riding is his only hobby. The Class VII student of Meridian School, Banjara Hills, recently won the Junior National Equestrian Championship in Delhi, receiving the first gold medal for Telangana where 31 competitors from the country participated.

“I started riding when I was six years old. My parents encouraged me to try the sport and I really started enjoying it. I used to practice at a local club first, but then we got four horses at home two for show jumping, one for dressage and one for normal riding,” says Abbas who won in the jumping category.

Abbas has been trained by his father, Hasim Ali Khan, who is a member of the Equestrian Federation of India. “On school days, I train only in the evening, after which I do my homework. But on weekends and holidays I practice in the morning and evening,” he adds.

Abbas, who also enjoys playing cricket, says that he will be participating in the Delhi Horse Show in April. He wants to become an IPS officer, but for right now, it is back to horses.
