Rameswaram: Trains bound to coastal temple town Rameswaram were delayed on Tuesday owing to replacement of worn out sections of the Pamban bridge. Officials were understood to have learnt during a recent inspection that 28 girders near pillar No. 61 of the bridge were in a worn out condition. The inspection was undertaken to assess the bridge’s structural safety following an earlier repair.
The girders, brought from Arakkonam, were being replaced since morning. The passenger train from Madurai and an express train from Chennai were detained at Mandapam. The two trains reached Rameswaram late owing to the delay caused by the repair works.
