London: Imran Khan, the Pakistani politician, has reportedly confirmed that he has married his girlfriend, BBC presenter Reham Khan. Mr Khan, 62, apparently told a group of reporters at London’s Heathrow airport on Monday night that he was a married man. Before boarding his flight back to Pakistan, he told Murtaza Ali Shah of Geo News that he was planning to “share the good news with the nation” on Tuesday.

Miss Khan, 41, a divorced mother-of-three, worked for the BBC as a weather presenter until 2013, when she moved back to her native Pakistan and began working for television channels there. It was suggested in October by Mr Khan’s ex-wife Jemima that he was marrying again. She said that she was abandoning the surname ‘Khan’ and reverting to her family name, because her ex-husband was about to re-marry.

“My ex-husband, Imran, recently announced that he intended to get re married soon, which made me think it’s probably time to change my name back to Goldsmith,” she said. Khan then devoted himself to politics, becoming an influential campaigner against the American use of drones in Pakistan to target Taliban commanders. When it was suggested that Khan could marry Miss Khan, an online backlash in Pakistan broke out, with commentators and Pakistan hardliners criticising her ‘revealing’ dress on Facebook.

She was seen at a horse-racing event wearing a knee length skirt and presenting television shows in a figure-hugging top. On December 31, Khan said on Twitter that reports of his impending marriage were ‘greatly exaggerated’.
