Coimbatore: Tamil Maanila Congress President GK Vasan on Wednesday said the Centre should not take hasty steps to send back Sri Lankan refugees living in various camps in Tamil Nadu.

"The Government should first ensure equal rights and status for Tamils along with other citizens, besides total security, once they returned there and not take hasty steps to send them back," he told reporters at the airport, en route to Perundurai near Erode district.

Then only the refugees can be sent back to their respective places, he said.

He refused to answer a query on reports that AICC member Karti Chidambaram, son of former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram, planned to form a new political outfit.
