Girls at Osmania University protest lack of water
University officials say the varsity is spending nearly Rs 1crore per annum on water resources
Hyderabad: The administration of the Osmania University has assured students that it is doing all that is needed to deal with summer water scarcity. Female students of the varsity had again protested against scanty water supply to their hostel. Varsity officials said they are carrying out a geological survey of groundwater on the campus to look for sources of groundwater. Inmates of the ladies' hostel had held a brief protest at midnight on Thursday against the lack of basic amenities and extremely scarce water supply.
Osmania University Registrar Prof E. Suresh Kumar said, “We are making all efforts to solve the water issue. I convened a meeting with engineers on Thursday evening to map the groundwater resources in the varsity, check the yield and our needs. We have asked our geology department faculty to prepare maps.”
University officials say the varsity is spending nearly Rs1crore per annum on just water resources. “We pay Rs30-40 lakh per annum to the Water Board for supply. Additionally, we pay tankers Rs 2.5 lakh every month,” another varsity official said.
