New Delhi: A 20-year-old Japanese tourist was raped on the outskirts of Jaipur early Sunday by a tourist guide, police said on Monday.

"We have received a complaint from a Japanese tourist alleging rape by a local man yesterday (Sunday)," police inspector general Dharam Chand Jain said.

Police inspector general D.C. Jain says the 20-year-old student met the suspect while sightseeing Sunday, where he had offered to act as her tour guide. Jain says the man later took the woman on his motorcycle to a farming village outside the city, where he threatened her with violence and then raped her on the side of the road before leaving her.

Villagers who heard the woman crying helped her contact police. Jain said Monday that a medical examination confirmed the woman had been raped. Police are searching for a suspect in his 20s.
