Digital locker to be password protected
Locker would be linked to the Aadhaar card and citizens could store their government issued documents
Hyderabad: Public feedback on the ‘Digital Locker’ concept and its implementation will be sought before the release of the final version. R.S. Sharma, secretary, department of electronics and IT, said that the Digital Locker would be linked to the Aadhaar card and citizens could store their government issued documents and certificates on the cloud. Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) is developing the security and software for this application.
Mr Sharma brushed aside security concerns (as the data would be stored online) and said that the system was very safe. A senior C-DAC official involved with the development of the Digital Locker said, “There is no security concern because the safety option features data encryption of the highest level. It will be protected by a One-Time Password, which will be sent to the user’s mobile each time he tries to access his cloud account, similar to a banking transaction. There is no issue of government scrutiny because the certificates stored are issued by the government departments.”
Addressing the gathering, Mr Sharma also said that the state government should also focus on using technology that can be shared by multiple departments. He added that technology like the Geographic Information System (GIS) should be made better use of. “GIS technologies like maps and navigation systems have become part of our lives. Unfortunately, use of this technology at the government level has not been great.” He also suggested use of GIS to bring together information used by departments on one platform.
