HYDERABAD: The thermal power plants in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana state are among the most polluting and inefficient in the entire country. This was revealed in a study report released on Saturday.
Almost all the thermal power plants assessed in the two states were red flagged for non-compliance to pollution standards, poor performance and poor management practices.
As many as 47 thermal power plants were assessed by the New Delhi-based Centre for Science and Environment for its Green Ratings Project. Three thermal power plants in Telangana State and one in Andhra Pradesh were assessed. Interestingly, CSE said that none of these plant managements cooperated for the study. They were assessed with publicly available data.
The plants were rated for 60 parameters like coal and water use, pollution and ash generation. The 2600 MW National Thermal Power Corporation Rama-gundam plant was rated best with a score of 25 per cent and ranked 17th in the country.
Only three other NTPC plants fared worse in the country. Andhra Pradesh government-run APGenco NTTPS thermal power plant in Vijayawada scored 21 per cent. TS has more reasons to worry as both the state-run plants in Kothagudem were ranked low. These plants were criticised heavily for regular non-compliance, poor performance and management practices.
“Twenty plants scored below 20 per cent, which is a reflection of their particularly poor environmental performance,” Priyavrat Bhati, programme director, CSE, said.
