Chennai: Chennai corporation Mayor Saidai S. Durai samy asked citizens to identify vacant land in the city that could be used for the construction of parking lots.
The invitation came at a public hearing on Wednesday when the residents of Nungambakkam gave a green signal to construct a multi-storeyed parking lot-cum-commercial complex on Uthamar Gandhi Salai here. The fully automated parking lot, spread across 4217 sq m, will house 192 cars and 160 two-wheelers and is estimated to cost Rs 24 crore.
The basement plus three-storeyed building would take one or two years to complete, said the Mayor, who pointed to the several initiatives by the Corporation to decongest vehicular traffic on the roads, worsened by construction activity, such as metro rail and flyovers.
“Zone 9, the corporation’s Teynampet office, will also shift to the new complex from the current location on Lake View Road, which is located on a playground in an interior area,” according to an official from Mahindra Consulting Engineering Limited, who is the consultant for the project.
It will be easy for the people to access the zonal office if it comes to the main area here. As the Corporation owns the land, the problem of land acquisition is also avoided,” he added.
Local Councillor S. Santhi said that the zonal office had now come nearer to the people. The feasibility study they did found that cars were the most preferred mode of transport in the locality with 48 per cent of usage, and two-wheelers was 18 per cent.
Parking cars in the multi-storeyed complex will prevent them from getting damaged and help ease vehicular congestion, the official note. There will be separate entrances for the car park, and the zonal office, with a few restaurants and shops. Residents feel that the project, if completed on time, will benefit everybody, she adds. State minister for social welfare and nutritious noon-meal programme B. Valarmathi was also present on the occasion.
