Toll crosses 200 in Afghan avalanche

The bulk of the deaths came in Panjshir province

Bazarak (Afghanistan): The death toll from a series of avalanches triggered by heavy snowfall in Afghanistan rose above 200 on Thursday, officials said. The bulk of the deaths came in Panjshir province, north of Kabul, where at least 168 people were killed, acting provincial governor Abdul Rahman Kabiri said.

“The death toll has risen to 168 people killed in avalanches in Panjshir province,” Kabiri said. The rest of the deaths came in Nuristan and Badakhshan, Nangarhar, Laghman and Bamiyan provinces.
