Rs 1,470 crore tax bill takes the fizz out off liquor shops in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh
Six depots each in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana did not supply IMFL to outlets
Hyderabad: Liquor outlets, bars and pubs in parts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana went partially dry on Monday, as there was no supply from the Beverages Corporation depots in both states.
The reason was that the income-tax department had served an attachment notice to the AP Beverages Corporation Ltd (including the TSBCL) on Saturday seeking tax dues of Rs 1,468.63 crore. The notice mentioned that the due amount was till 2012-2013 excluding interest.
The APBCL and TSBCL are arms of the state governments that have exclusive wholesale license to sell Indian-made foreign liquor and foreign liquor to retailers.
On Monday six depots each in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana did not supply IMFL to outlets. “We received order from headquarters not to supply any liquor until further orders,” said Mr Kulkarni, Hyderabad depot-II manager.
