Guwahati: Curfew was clamped in Dimapur on Sunday Nagaland and 22 people were arrested in connection with the lynching of a rape accused, a senior police officer said. The curfew was lifted at 3 pm.

Cops were tight-lipped and most of the senior police officers were inaccessible to comment on the arrests. However, security sources said that arrests were made after going through the mobile video clippings of the incident.

The preliminary medical report of the woman allegedly raped by Syed Farid Khan, who was lynched, says that she had been raped, the ADGP said.

Meanwhile, more than 8,000 people attended the burial of Khan in Assam’s Karimganj district.

DIG, southern range, Binod Kumar  said there was no report of any untoward incident from the three districts —Karimganj, Cachar and Hailakandi where bandh was being observed by several political, social and business organisations on Sunday.

Several women organisations claimed that the alleged rape victim was intimidated and was pressurised to withdraw the FIR against the dead man. On the other hand, Muslim Council Dimapur (MCD) has requested Nagaland based NGOs to come together to address the issue of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.

Working president of MCD A. Rahman said that Khan was a bonafide Indian citizen. His father was an ex-serviceman in the Army and his brother is also in the Army.
