The text message supposedly specified Smith's intentions to end the marriage after initially denying this to Deane when she allegedly confronted him about it, Sport24 reported.
It was further reported that Deane's close friends have claimed that Smith had a penchant for the limelight, finds her boring and says that she is a nag when she asks him to spend time with his family.

However, Smith has since released a statement to dispel these reports. He stated that it is disappointing that certain segments of the media have chosen to publish speculation and accusations as regards the means and manner of their marriage breakdown.

The former skipper also stated that it is naturally tempting to respond, however, other than to deny the accusations that have been published, adding that he has chosen not to comment. He is hopeful that people would respect that.
Smith claimed that his intention remains to act with dignity and respect throughout this process for the wellbeing of his children and family.
