Land Bill: New ordinance likely
The government can prorogue the session in the event of re-promulgating the land ordinance
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held consultations with senior colleagues Tuesday on the stand to be taken on the controversial Land Acquisition Bill, which couldn’t be tabled in the Rajya Sabha due to lack of numbers.
Mr Modi met BJP president Amit Shah and Cabinet colleagues Arun Jaitley, Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj and Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday evening to discuss the strategy. The government was keen to get the Bill passed in both Houses before March 20, but in vain.
The meeting is learnt to have discussed various options before the government, given that the Land Amendment Ordinance must be replaced with a Bill by April 6, when the six-week deadline ends, otherwise it lapses. One option is to convene a joint session of Parliament.
Though the Houses have been adjourned till April 20, sources told this newspaper that the government could still prorogue the session in the event of re-promulgating the land ordinance.
