Now, BJP overtakes China Reds, becomes world's largest party
BJP leaders will visit each new entrant to welcome them and give them a membership card
New Delhi: With two days more to go for the BJP’s ongoing membership drive to end, the saffron party on Sunday crossed the 8.79-crore mark, surpassing the Chinese Communist Party, which has 8.67 crore members.
The BJP’s target is to reach the 10-crore mark by March 31. The party may have to extend the deadline by a few days as some units, including Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, J&K and Assam, have sought more time to reach their individual targets.
Interestingly, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Rajasthan, which are behind the target mark, are ruled by the BJP. The tech-enabled membership drive, “Sashakt BJP — Sashakt Bharat”, was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 1. He was also the first to renew his membership.
Sources said the exact number of primary members who joined the BJP will be determined after verification.
