Hyderabad: Five undertrials facing terror charges were shot dead by their police escort on the National Highway near Pembarthy bordering Warangal and Nalgonda districts in Telangana on Tuesday morning.

Viquar Ahmed and four others of his Tehreek Galba-e-Islam, a Hyderabad-based terror group, were killed in the escort van while they were being brought to Hyderabad to the court from the Warangal jail where they were lodged.

Police claimed that while the escort party was passing between Jangaon of Warangal district and Aler of Nalgonda district, the accused requested them to stop the vehicle on the pretext of attending nature’s calls. While returning to the van, they snatched the cops’ weapons in order to escape. While the police tried to apprehend them, they opened fire on them. In self-defence the police returned fire, resulting in the death of all five terror accused.
