Hyderabad: A couple attempted suicide by jumping into the Hussainsagar allegedly due to financial problems on Monday. While the woman died, her husband was rescued by the police and shifted to hospital. The couple was identified as G. Sravan, 24, a private employee and G. Pavani, 23. The couple lives in Gunrock Enclave in Sikh Village and have a one-and-a-half-year-old daughter Sravika.

According to the Ramgopalpet police, Sravan and Pavani loved each other and with the consent of their families married about two years   ago. Though initially after married couple was happy, in the recent   past, Sravan was facing severe financial problems. Though he tried hard, he failed to clear his debts. He was depressed over his financial problems and decided to commit suicide along with his wife.

The couple were staying at Pavani’s parents’ house in Ambedkar Nagar in Sikh Village. On Monday morning around 9am when her parents, both labourers had gone to work, the couple came to the Hussain Sagar to commit suicide.

“It was around 12 noon. They jumped into the lake from near the Ramgopalpet police outpost area. Our staff along with the Lake police who noticed them jumped into the lake to rescue them. The staff could rescue Sravan but Pavani had drowned by then. Later her body was found stuck in the mud on the lake bed,” said Mr J. Satish sub-inspector of Ramgopalpet police station.

Sravan who was injured was shifted to the Gandhi Hospital and is being treated. His condition is said to be stable. Pavani’s body was retrieved from the lake and was shifted to the mortuary. It was later handed over to the family after a post mortem in the evening.

A case under section 174 CrPC was booked by the Ramgopalpet police and is being investigated. Meanwhile Pavani’s family informed the police that the couple lived happily and they had no disputes. They were unaware of their financial problems.

Lake Police Inspector Ms Sreedevi said police constable Satyanarayana and home guard B. Karthik Kumar played an important role in the rescue.
