Hyderabad: A traffic homeguard from Cyberabad turned out to be the most wanted chain snatcher in the city after he covertly targeted over 36 women in the last few months.

Homeguard Mahesh Singh Chowda, 28, used a high-speed bike when he was not on duty and snatched 1.12 kg gold ornaments. He took the help of his paramour to dispose the gold and was never suspected till a few days ago when the cops traced his bike. He even conducted a recce at vulnerable spots and studied police movements in those areas to carry out his operation. Cyberabad police arrested him on Tuesday.

Mahesh was confident that no investigation official would find him suspicious since he was part of the force.

“He was targeting victims for quite sometime now. His modus operandi is to move on road in the opposite direction of the target on a bike and snatch the chains. He used a Hero Honda Karizma. He used to do it in the morning and evening,” said T.V. Shashidhar Reddy, joint commissioner of police, Cyberabad.

Mahesh hid his identity and used his driving skills to escape. He also tried his best to understand if any police probe is directed at him in the snatching cases.

During the course of probe, Balanagar detective inspector D. Bhaskar Reddy and his team stumbled upon a suspicious red colour Karizma bike at one site of offence. “Later, we could figure out his connection with the bike, and interrogated him. He confessed that he committed 36 chain snatching offences,” said Mr Bhaskar Reddy.
